Can you give some advice about what Yoga postures can be practiced when you are suffering from SPD? What I read seems to say don't stand on one leg and keep your legs together at all times. What's left!!!

Hello, I hae just found out that I also have SPD. I am very surprised as I have been active throughout my pregnancy, but apparently this may have been the cause! I have been practicing yoga for two years and my yoga teacher is goingto do a full class next week on pubic pain. In the meantime she's recommended that I avaoid any positions that open the legs, sqauts etc and concentrate on the cat pose and breathing. I will hopefully find out more next week and let you know if you are interested. I have also been refered to a physiotherapist by my midwife so I'm hoping this will help too.

It would be brilliant to hear what she suggests. What I read seems to have conflicting advice - in the end it really seems to be what works for each individual. I'd be really pleased to learn what yoga things work for you and others with SPD though.
Thanks

Hi, my clsas is tomorrow (Monday) so will let you know. I agree about the conflicting info, the hospital and midwife gave me an information sheet but it wasn't much help! I am finding that walking very slowly with small steps is helping me keep mobile, I keep my legs and knees together when rolling over in bed and getting out of the car, which is also helpingto ease things. I think the pain and mobilty varies from different women, I was speakingto someone the other day and she had SPD in all 3 of her pregnancies and ended up on crutches for the last one! I am assured however that this rectifys itself after the birth, but at the moment I'm struggling to see how on earth I'm actually going to get through it!! Speak soon. Julie

Any wide leg position should be avoided. Dr. Timothy McCall who writes for the Yoga Journal, stated "Wide leg positions are contraindicated during pregnancy" I have been teaching Yoga for almost 35 years and decided I would no longer teach yoga and pregnancy, there are too many risks, another example is Pre-Eclampsia. Mum-to-be may have have an undiagnosed medical condition and I speak from personal knowledge, I was born with a hole in the heart and did not know about it, I was one of the lucky ones. SPD is crippling. Remember there are two of you to protect. Keep safe, keep wello........Margaret W.
